Adaptive PE

Adapted physical education (APE) is provided at FUSD for students who are unable to get a quality experience in the mainstream physical education setting due to a disability. Students can qualify for APE by either testing 2 standard deviations below their age on a gross motor skills test, not meeting the requirements on a behavior checklist filled out by the mainstream physical education teacher, or having a cognitive delay that impairs their safety or quality of experience in the mainstream class.

The goal of all special education teachers is to put students in the least restrictive environment. That goes for APE as well. We work cooperatively with the mainstream physical education teachers to involve students in APE in mainstream physical education classes when it’s appropriate.

Students work on gross motor skills ranging from skipping and jumping to tennis and football. Other activities include speed stackers, buddy walkers, bean bag toss, bocce ball, all major sports and fitness activities. There is a good balance of hard work and lots of fun!
