Florence Unified School District Community,

The Florence Unified School District (FUSD) is gearing up to reintroduce the inmate work crew program in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Corrections. This program, which was highly beneficial in the past, is set to resume following a hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The inmates participating in this program are from the minimum-security yard (Florence West)and have been thoroughly vetted by the Department of Corrections to ensure they are suitable for outside work crews. This careful selection process is essential to maintaining the safety and integrity of our school environment.

The inmate work crews will be directly supervised by trained FUSD staff. Our supervisors have received proper training both from the Department of Corrections and our own district protocols to ensure the highest standards of oversight and safety.

The primary goal of this initiative is to manage our resources efficiently and maintain our school grounds while providing inmates with meaningful work experiences that support their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. By utilizing inmate labor for general labor jobs, we can significantly reduce costs within our limited capital budget, allowing us to allocate more resources to critical educational needs.

We are confident that the reintroduction of this program will once again provide mutual benefits to both our district and the participating inmates. We appreciate your understanding and support as we implement this valuable program.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Sincerely,
Mark Lamas
